From Our Home to Yours: A Message from the Founders

The Spark of a New Mission

Our story didn’t begin in a boardroom; it began at our front door. After years of the quiet, reflective chapter of "empty nesting," our lives shifted in a sudden and profound way. Our home opened to our niece and nephew, and we transitioned overnight into a "sudden family."

Navigating the world of kinship care opened our eyes to a reality many families face: the path to a stable, successful future is often blocked by the very hardships a child is trying to overcome. We saw firsthand that resilience is a powerful spark, but it needs the right environment to grow into a flame.

Building the Foundation: High School, Trade, and Beyond

At Hunter James, we believe that a student’s potential should never be limited by their circumstances. While many organizations focus only on the finish line of a college degree, we know that the journey starts much earlier—and takes many different forms.

Our foundation provides critical tuition assistance and educational support for students across the United States who have faced major life transitions and hardships. We are committed to fueling every stage of the academic journey:

  • The College-Prep Bridge: We fund high school tuition for students to attend premier, college-preparatory environments, ensuring they have the academic stability they need during their most formative years.
  • The Skilled Trades: We recognize that excellence takes many shapes. We support students pursuing trade and vocational schools, empowering the next generation of builders, creators, and innovators.
  • Higher Education: We provide a path to and through the university level, ensuring that financial barriers don't stand in the way of a degree.

Fragrance with a Purpose

Every candle we hand-pour in our St. Louis studio is designed to bring a sense of "sanctuary" and light into your space. But at Hunter James, light is an action, not just an aesthetic.

That is why 5% of every purchase goes directly to the Hunter James Scholarship Foundation. When you choose a Hunter James fragrance, you are directly investing in a student’s tuition, uniforms, or books. You are helping a young person—whether they are in St. Louis or across the country—transition from surviving to thriving.

Our family’s "sudden" journey taught us that home is the support system that allows you to grow. Thank you for being part of ours, and for helping us light the way for scholars nationwide.

With gratitude,

The Founders of Hunter James Candle Co. & Scholarship Foundation

Our Three Paths of Support

At the Hunter James Scholarship Foundation, we believe there is no "one size fits all" journey to success. We provide financial assistance across three distinct tiers to ensure that every student has a chance to turn their resilience into a career.

Path 1: The College-Prep Bridge (High School)

For students entering or currently attending tuition-based high schools.

We believe the foundation for a successful life is poured at age 14. We provide tuition assistance for students to attend high-quality, college-preparatory high schools that offer the structure, safety, and academic rigor they need to excel.

  • Who it’s for: Rising 9th graders or current high school students.
  • What it covers: Tuition, uniforms, and essential school fees.

Path 2: The Skilled Trades (Vocational)

For students pursuing specialized technical or trade certifications.

The world is built by innovators and creators. We proudly support students who choose to master a trade—from electrical and plumbing to digital arts and healthcare technology—ensuring they graduate debt-free and ready to enter the workforce.

  • Who it’s for: High school seniors or graduates entering accredited trade or vocational programs.
  • What it covers: Program tuition, required tools, and certification fees.

Path 3: Higher Education (College & University)

For students pursuing associate or bachelor’s degrees.

We provide "gap-filling" scholarships for students who have been accepted into two-year or four-year institutions. Our goal is to ensure that a lack of funds never stands between a determined student and their degree.

  • Who it’s for: Students accepted into or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  • What it covers: Tuition, books, and university-related expenses.

The Application Process

We’ve designed our process to be as simple as possible for families in transition.

  1. Submit Your Story: Complete our online application, including a brief personal narrative about your journey and your goals.
  2. Provide Documentation: Upload your recent transcripts and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, mentor, or coach who knows your character.
  3. Review & Interview: Our committee reviews applications on a rolling basis. Finalists may be invited to a brief video or in-person interview so we can get to know the person behind the paper.
  4. Award & Support: Once awarded, funds are sent directly to the educational institution. We don't just send a check; we stay in touch to cheer you on throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I am already enrolled in school?

Yes! We accept applications from rising 9th graders through current college/trade students.

Does the money go to me or the school?

To ensure transparency, all funds are disbursed directly to the registrar or financial office of your institution.

Are scholarships renewable?

Yes. Students may re-apply each year provided they maintain their GPA and enrollment status.

Eligibility & Hardship

What do you consider a "major life hardship"?

While every story is unique, we prioritize students who have experienced kinship care, foster care, the loss of a parent or guardian, or significant family displacement that has impacted their academic stability.

I don't live in St. Louis. Can I still apply?

Absolutely. While our studio is based in St. Louis, our mission is national. We accept applications from students residing in all 50 U.S. states.

Is there a minimum age or grade requirement?

We support students as young as rising 9th graders (entering high school) through adults pursuing trade certifications or university degrees. There is no upper age limit for trade school or higher education applicants.

Financials & Awards

What expenses does the scholarship cover?

Funds are primarily intended for tuition. However, depending on the award tier, they may also cover mandatory fees, required textbooks, uniforms, or specific tools required for trade programs.

Can I use this scholarship along with other financial aid?

Yes. Our goal is to fill the "funding gap." We encourage students to apply for FAFSA and other grants; our scholarship can be used to cover the remaining balance.

Does the 5% from candle sales go to a general fund or specific students?

All revenue contributions from Hunter James Candle Co. go into our general scholarship pool, which is then distributed to our selected scholars based on their documented financial need.

The Application Process

When will I be notified if I’ve received an award?

For the 2026-2027 cycle, all applicants will be notified of their status via email by May 15, 2026.

Can I submit a video instead of a written essay?

Yes! We welcome a 2-3 minute video narrative if that allows you to share your story more authentically. You can provide a YouTube or Vimeo link in the application portal.

Who should write my letter of recommendation?

Someone who can speak to your resilience and character—this could be a teacher, a coach, a caseworker, or a mentor from a community organization. We do not accept recommendations from family members.

On School Choice & Accreditation

Does the high school have to be a private or parochial school?

Not necessarily. While we primarily provide tuition assistance for private, parochial, or independent college-prep schools, we also consider applications for specialized public "magnet" or "charter" schools if there are associated fees or specific resource gaps caused by hardship.

What if my trade school is a short-term certification (6 months)?

We support accredited programs of all lengths. Whether it is a two-year associate degree or a focused 12-week intensive certification (like CDL, Coding, or CNA), you are eligible to apply.

On the Candle Studio & Funding

How can I track the impact of my candle purchase?

Transparency is key to our mission. Each quarter, we update our "Impact Report" on this page, showing the total funds raised through candle sales and the number of students currently supported by the Hunter James community.

Can I nominate a student for a scholarship?

We love referrals! While the student must ultimately complete the application themselves to ensure their commitment, you can "Gift a Nomination" by sending them the link to our Eligibility Checklist.

On the "Sudden Family" / Kinship Care Focus

Do I have to be in a formal foster care program to qualify?

No. We specifically recognize "informal" kinship care—situations where a relative (grandparent, aunt/uncle, older sibling) has taken in a child without formal state intervention. We understand that these families often have the least access to traditional state funding.

Is the scholarship based on grades or need?

It is a "Holistic Award." While we look for a 2.5 GPA to ensure academic readiness, we weigh your story of resilience and your financial "gap" just as heavily as your transcript.

On Post-Award Support

What happens if my circumstances change mid-year?

We view our scholars as part of the Hunter James family. If you face a new crisis or transition during your scholarship year, we encourage you to reach out to our foundation board for mentorship and potential emergency resource navigation.

The Hunter James Scholarship Covenant: A Partnership in Success

Receiving a Hunter James Scholarship is more than a financial award; it is an invitation into our community. To ensure we are stewarding our candle customers' contributions well, we ask our scholars to commit to the following:

Collapsible content

Do I need to maintain a certain GPA?

Yes. To remain eligible for fund disbursement each semester, we ask our scholars to maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. If you face an especially difficult semester, we ask that you communicate with us early so we can look into tutoring or mentorship resources.

Is there a "Thank You" requirement?

We ask all recipients to write a brief annual "Letter to the Community." Our candle customers love to hear how their purchases are changing lives. Your letter doesn't need to be long—just a sincere update on your academic journey and how the support has impacted you.

Do I need to stay in touch during the year?

We require a "Mid-Year Check-in." This is a simple online form or a 15-minute call to update us on your progress. Because we focus on students in transition, we want to make sure you have the support you need before small challenges become big ones.

Are there community service requirements?

A: While not mandatory, we strongly encourage our scholars to participate in at least 10 hours of community service per year. Whether it’s helping at a local food pantry in St. Louis or tutoring a younger student in your hometown, we believe in the power of "passing the light" forward.

What happens if I change schools or majors?

Life happens! If you transfer schools or switch from a Prep-Track to a Trade-Track, you must notify the Foundation within 30 days. We will work with you to ensure your funding transitions correctly to your new accredited institution.

Am I expected to participate in Hunter James events?

We occasionally host "Scholar Spotlights" or local St. Louis meetups. Participation is always optional, but we love to give our scholars the opportunity to network with our board and other professionals in their field of study.
